It Was All Good… And Then

I had just come back from a conference geared towards curvy women and heard about Dia & Co. If you’ve never heard of them, they’re a plus size clothing brand that advocates women to be more confident in every outfit! After the conference, I felt fearless, like who is afraid of the big bad wolf? Not me, right? As I looked through my closet certain that I wasn’t afraid of anything in there, fear was hanging on a purple Joy Mangano huggable hanger. A cute body con dress that I felt would look so good on me when I was online shopping only to receive it and remember that I don’t have an hour glass shape.

Every time I got dressed to go out I’d make an excuse as to why I wouldn’t wear the dress. Ugh, I’m not in the mood for shapewear tonight. I’m bloated today (I’m not). I will tell myself anything to avoid wearing the dress that I knew I wanted to wear. I mean hell, I bought the dress I obviously had the intention of wearing it. So I forced myself out of my comfort zone and stopped making excuses.

I am certain that I was avoiding wearing my body conscious dresses because showing my shape in this capacity isn’t my favorite. Every magazine I’ve ever read has always steered me away from form fitting clothing based on my body type. There are so many body positive advocates that say forget flattery wear what you want. I can’t lie I have not been totally delivered from the rules of flattery.

I am often left wondering do I really like what I chose to wear or was I told that it would flatter my body type. I feel like I shouldn’t have to compromise being stylish because I am a woman of a certain size. That’s why it’s important to step outside of the box to discover what you like separate from what you have been told looks good on you and focus on what actually makes you feel good. Nothing beats a try like wear especially if you already bought the dress!

  1. I’ve got a couple dresses I feel the same way about. Once I got them, the material was a little thinner and more clingy than I anticipated. So I’ve never worn them. Glad you were able to get beyond that fear. After reading this, maybe I will too. 😊

    1. Wear them!!! Wear them well. I know you will look great!
