How to Style Yourself on Stage

You know what we never talk about? That I am a poet and a spoken word artist and  I have performed nationally since 2009. I feel like I often get a deer in headlights look when I tell people that I perform spoken word, it’s almost as if they don’t know how to react. I have performed in large stage productions and I have always been responsible for styling myself.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I was recently a cast member in the spoken word stage play Coochie Chronicles. The stage play speaks to the narrative and of the issues that women of color. I wanted to make a statement when with my wardrobe. I wanted to present myself in a very sexy way to juxtapose the strong pieces that I would perform. I wanted to show that a black woman can be sexy, smart, socially aware. and sure of herself without having to downplay the way she looks.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Are you a stand-up comedian? Are you a singer? Are you a public speaker? How you present yourself on stage is a part of your performance. I can tell you first hand that when my outfit doesn’t photograph well it haunts me. I have been styling myself on stage and have learned the tricks of the trade. Here are my three tips on ensuring you’re ready for the hot stage lights.

More is More

Bright lights tend to wash out minor details. If you have a subtle understated style some of the more intricate details may not be seen from the back row. If you will be in a dark theater or club performing with a bright spotlight shining down on you be sure to up the ante. Bold jewelry, bright colors, and shiny details. Play with color and contrast to create visual interest in your look just keep in mind that sometimes a busy print may not be as appealing on stage as it is close up.

Bird’s Eye View

Before I wear something on stage I take a few pictures in the outfit. Looking in the mirror is not the same point of view as seeing it in a picture. Think of this picture as a first draft you will be able to edit the look before you hit the stage. Wrinkles are photogenic consider having your outfit pressed at the dry cleaners or iron it yourself. Once you are on stage and people post pictures of your performance there are no take backs, maybe you can untag yourself, but social media lives forever.

Show Your Truth

My on-stage look may be different than yours but these tips still apply. I can not stress this point enough bright lights tell no lies. Whether you want to admit it or not the moment you step on stage you are representing yourself. What do you want people to walk away with after they experience you or the character you are portraying. Your on stage look speaks before you do. Your performance and your on stage look need to speak your truth.

Let’s Take A Daycation! The Perfect Picnic

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Daycation

Don’t allow a lack of time or funds stop you from enjoying your summer. Take a daycation and relieve your work week stress. Nothing puts me more at ease than a great picnic with friends. Instead of going to the usual gathering place pick a new venue, pull out the cooler, and pack your picnic basket full of goodies.

The Perfect Get Away

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I actually found the perfect getaway right outside of Cincinnati at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. Located in Hamilton, Ohio just far away enough to feel like I left town. Pyramid Hill is an outdoor museum focusing on monumental pieces of sculpture in an environment of meadows, forests, and various gardens. The beautiful art and wide open spaces were the perfect backdrop for a picnic with friends.

Get Real Martha!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I love my adorable wicker picnic basket (on sale here) it’s Pinterest worthy but in all reality, it won’t keep anything cool. For a picnic for more than two  I always bring a cooler (similar here) in addition to my cute basket because nobody wants to eat warm potato salad. I pack a tablecloth, serving ware, napkins, and anything that is not temperature sensitive in my basket.

I’ve seen great photographs of picnics styled with real plates and ceramic serving dishes. It looks fantastic but ain’t nobody got time for that stick with light reusable food containers. You can be even more resourceful when packing a salad, clean the lettuce and assemble your pre-cut vegetables in the same plastic container the salad is sold in. That way once the salad is gone you can also throw out the container and pack up your things with one less container to take home. Keep in mind that whatever you pack, you also have to carry.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Making sandwiches? Toast your bread at home and stick it back in the bread bag and you will have a load of toasted bread. You can assemble your sandwiches at the picnic and your sandwich won’t be soggy.

How many barbeques have you been to this summer? Switch up your picnic options with light fun bites my Italian Potato Salad is perfect for a hot summer day!

Cut the potatoes into small cubes. Place the warm potatoes, diced red onion,  and 1/2 cup Italian salad dressing in a container with a lid and place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight.

In a pan fry the pancetta until browned on both sides, place on paper towel, and allow to  cool.  Drain the roasted red peppers and dice into small pieces.

Style Sunday | Office to Cocktails

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The temperature is rising, and my girlfriends are calling and asking me to meet them for cocktails. I love an alcoholic beverage after work, but I’m not always “cocktail ready” at the office.I want to accept as many last minute invites as I can without melting down at the thought that I skipped out on applying makeup.  I wanted the best tips on getting ready in a pinch so I reached out to my girl Saadia The Makeup Artist so we could collaborate and give the best advice on how to go from office to cocktails!

Saddia’s Office to Cocktails Tips

saadia

We have all received that call while we are at work, “Girl! Let’s go out for happy hour”.  Yes, it sounds good until you look in the mirror and see that you may need to spice up your look for the night!  I want to share a few things that I always keep in my makeup bag to transition my day look into a fierce night look!

1)      Red Lipstick

2)      Eyeliner

3)      Bronzer

Red Lipstick
I absolutely love a red lip! Anyone can wear it, and it’s classic and timeless. My favorite brand is by MAC from their retro line called, “Feel So Grand.” It has a matte finish and the pigment is super rich and requires minimal touch throughout the day!

Eyeliner
One of my signatures as a makeup artist is my winged eyeliner, also known as the “Cat eye.”  I love the style, and it’s so flattering for many eye types. Wet N Wild has a great gel liner that I use with an angled brush to get a clean, sharp line.

Bronzer
I use Covergirl Queen Natural Hue Bronzer to add a quick contour to my look.  Bronzer can add definition to your face, especially for round faces like mine, and add a warm glow to the skin.

I believe these three tips can take a day look into night time.

If you stay ready, then you don’t have to get ready. Being prepared is half of the battle, and I found all the products that will help you get fly one the go!

The Lay N Go

The Lay N Go is a washable travel cosmetics bag, and although it’s promoted for the use of travel, it’s the perfect size to fit inside a medium to a larger sized purse. I love that it opens up 20 inches wide and hidden storage within the bag. When you are done applying your makeup you just pull the drawstring to close the bag and you don’t have to worry about makeup getting on the lining of your handbag.

What’s in my bag:

Nail Polish Removing Wipes– Chipped nail polish, no worries. One polish removing wipe is good to for all 10 fingers.

Evian Mineral Spray: An after work cocktail can turn into all night outing and getting ready on the go may mean you don’t have time to prime your skin for more makeup. I prime my face and set my makeup with this spray water. Bonus if you’re meeting for drinks at an outdoor patio bar a quick spray of Evian water will keep you cool, calm, and collected.

Mally Beauty Blush Single: In a real pinch I’ll put cream blush on my cheeks and eyes just to give myself an all over glow. I love Mally Beauty blush because it’s light and creamy and the colors are complimentary.

Netrogena Makeup Removing Wipes: This should be an essential in any purse because accidents happen sometimes you just need to press the reset button on your skin.

Queen Stay Lucious Lips color Duchess: Matte lips are all the rage but this glossy berry color won my heart is great for medium brown skin tones.

Maybeline Fit Me Shine Free Foundation: Medium coverage foundation in a convenient stick that won’t leak all over your makeup bag. Need I say more?

Tartlette Tease Pallet: I love a good eyeshadow pallet and this Tarte palette is perfection. The colors inside are super pigmented the pallet can take you from day to night.

Shop With Me | Cincinnati Consignment

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

If a tourist came to Cincinnati, Ohio and asked me what does my city have to offer my answer would be shopping and eating. If you are in the know, Cincinnati is an excellent place to secondhand shop (and eat). With so many local thrift stores and consignment shops, the odds are ever in your favor. One shop that I stop in regularly is Legacies in Hyde Park.

Legacies is a consignment shop that sells furniture, home goods, clothing, and accessories. I love the variety that I find in Legacies the furniture is always in good shape, and the jewelry selection is so unique. It’s the perfect place to shop when you’re looking for pieces that you won’t see anywhere else to give your home those extra personal touches. You can donate and shop at Legacies, and the proceeds benefit the Cancer Support Community.

Here a few of my thrifting rules:

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

See Past the Moment:

Look at the shape of the furniture before you judge the color or fabric. If you’re buying furniture on a budget and you see a couch with a great shape in a color you don’t like, consider getting a sofa cover or large throw blanket to bring the piece back into context for your space.  If you have money to spend, and you have found a piece that looks similar to a high-end piece that you have had your eye on but you dislike the upholstery buying the piece and having it reupholstered is the perfect option for a custom design.

Art on A Budget

Can’t afford to invest in art, it’s all good, the best place to find interesting pieces on a budget is at the consignment shop. I always manage to find a gem every time I’m in Legacies. When searching for art secondhand look for pieces that have quality framing and interesting details. I loved this framed fan it would look great in a bedroom or a bathroom.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Jewels on Display

I adore costume jewelry, and the best place to find interesting pieces is Legacies. With an extensive selection of jewelry, you will not be disappointed. Looking for a cool broach? Legacies also have an impressive assortment of interesting clip on earrings the endless selection will make it hard to leave a piece behind.

Traditional Pieces Within Reach

When you finally have a great dining room set adding, the finishing touches can make a big difference. A set of china can set you back a pretty penny. I have found beautiful China and traditional tea sets, and coffee services at Legacies for reasonable prices. I find that the entire set is sold at one price. Having the right serving ware makes entertaining a breeze.

Style Sunday | Home Office Style

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Having a side hustle ain’t easy but somebody’s got to make space for it, and it might as well be you. Having a home office is possible even if you don’t think you have space, trust me I know. My small style studio is more like a style corner, but it is entirely functional and suits my needs as a lifestyle blogger. I’ve found ways to tuck away my craft tools, photo props, and made space for the clothes that I need to style for future looks.

You may not be a blogger, but my tips will help you take your small messy space and transform it into a  Pinterest-worthy nook.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

When there is a will there is a way!

You can find space where ever you are the reality is you’re going to have to sacrifice something. My office is in my small bedroom I had to remove furniture that I had before and donate it to the Goodwill to make space. If you want an office, you may have to give up some living space. I know a few people who use there eat in kitchen area or have dedicated half of their living room for their business.

Get Inventive

Got a door? Use that vertical space for all it’s worth. If you have an extra closet, measure it and see if you can fit a small desk inside of the closet, you can close the closet door when you have guests.  Below is the back of my bedroom door I bought a clear shoe organizer and filled it with craft supplies. It helps me see everything that I have and keeps my desk from being overcrowded with my supplies.

Stay Inspired

SAM_0793.JPG

Be sure to incorporate images that will inspire you in your space. I created a gallery wall with framed art. I DIY-ed my framed art by framing greeting that I purchased in an art museum gift shop. If you are into art buying small prints and postcards is a great way to have the art that inspires you without breaking the bank! If you don’t have a lot of wall space consider posting an inspirational quote that will inspire you to stay motivated.

 Stay on theme

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I started researching home office organization and got overwhelmed. I had to stop over thinking it and prioritize by what I needed to be productive in my space. I knew that I need to be able to see the clothes that I planned on styling. Mixing my new purchases with the rest of my wardrobe was ineffective everything was getting lost in the shuffle. I bought a clothes rack at Target so that anything I planned on using to style a look could be hung up and out in the open. Don’t get too overzealous about Martha Stewart level organization, something about your current set up isn’t working figure out what that is and address it.

I hope these tips inspire you to get your home office style in order. There comes a time when you have set up your side hustle so it can be your main hustle or at the very least function so business can be handled. If you have questions about how to get your space in order let me know in the comments below.

Small Closet Organization, Made Easy!

For so long I have wanted to get my closet in order. I searched my usual online resources for inexpensive tips on how to get my space together. Let’s just say that Pinterest and I have two entirely different ideas of quick, easy and low-cost closet upgrades. Many articles on organization recommend investing in a closet system which in my opinion seemed time-consuming and well not easy.

I reorganized my closet space for under $100. These are also handy tips to anyone renting because I did not make any structural changes to my existing shelving. This post is my lazy girl’s guide to getting the most out of your small closet.

Functional and Sexy

small closet organization

No closet doors, no problem. Measure your closet and buy a tension rod that will fit in the width of your closet. Hang sheers or curtains  tp give a sexy boudoir feel to your space and bonus it functions as a door. You can close the sheers for coverage in the event someone sees your closet in one of it’s less organized moments.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I purge items from my wardrobe regularly (at least twice a year) which usually turns into shopping my closet. I found accessories that I had not carried as often as I originally intended. Before I stored these items in an under the bed storage case which was not effective.  If I don’t see an item, I am less likely to carry it.

I have wire shelving in my closet which makes it difficult to place smaller items on my shelf. I went to the dollar store and bought a piece of this cardboard and cut it to fit my shelf; this made it easy to display my clutches and other small accessories at eye level.

Let There Be Light

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I don’t have a light in my closet which is inconvenient when I am getting dressed in the evening. I loved the idea of using light to help stage my accessories like  a boutique. I did not have the time or the money to invest in a major electrical upgrade. I found a set of battery operated LED lights from Target (in-store). You can find similar lights on Amazon. I hung the lights with Command strips; the strips work like velcro which is great for two reasons, no holes in the wall, and it also makes it easy to change the batteries.

Cliche but True

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I admit it I was a non-believer, I thought having matching hangers was a scam invented by stores like Home Goods to get people to purchase more hangers.  I saw an ad promoting Huggable Hangers and noticed that they now come in royal purple. These hangers had me at hello. I got a great deal on HSN.com. The set of Huggable Hangers  that I purchased included:

    • 24 shirt hangers
    • 24 suit hangers
    • Printed garment bag
    • 2 printed dust covers
    • Over-the-door hook
    • 4 printed totes
    • Manufacturer’s 1-year limited warranty

I have the same amount of clothes, and they take up half of space than they did before. What is a girl to do with more closet space?

To Thy Own Jewelry Be True

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I have tried on several occasions to organize my jewelry only for it to return to its original untidy state. This Huggable Hangers 30-Pocket Organizer is just what I needed. Since it has a zipper and snap closures at the top none of my jewelry falls out. It also a variety of pocket sizes, so there is room for everything from larger statement necklaces down to my small button earrings. Now that my jewelry has a place in the closet it has freed up a lot of space on my dresser which was well, covered in necklaces.

Overall I am very happy with how a few minor changes made a huge difference in my closet. Picking out something to wear got one hundred times easier now that I can see everything in my closet. I hope these tips inspire you to pull your space together.

DIY Heart Wreath

I am team single this Valentines Day but being single never stops my fun!! Valentines Day is the only holiday you can rock pink, buy conversation hearts, and eat as many boxes of chocolate as you want!  I have no issue with being my own Valentine. I wanted to usher the spirit of love into my home by making this  DIY heart shaped wreath.

For this project you will need:

Coffee filters ( I used two packs, but the amount depends on the size of the heart)

Two tea bags ( I used Tazo Passion Tea for the color)

Cardboard

A heart shaped item/ or you can freehand a heart

Scissors

Box cutter

Satin ribbon

Hot glue gun

Step One (optionalDSCN1702

Boil water and steep the tea bags, being sure to press the tea bags to get as much color from the tea as possible. Saturate the coffee filters in the tea for at least 10 minutes or until you achieve your desired color.

PS. Dying the coffee filters this way is time-consuming which is why step one is optional. You can always spray paint the coffee filters after you adhere them to the wreath form. I just wanted the delicate color that comes from dying with tea.

Step two:

DSCN1756

Allow the coffee filters to dry completely. In this picture, I have them stacked, but the filters dry much faster when you lay each filter out individually. I learned the hard the hatd way!!

Step three:DSCN1780

Trace your heart shaped item onto the cardboard. I used a cardboard project display board from the dollar store and a foam heart from Michael’s.

Step four:

DSCN1781

Cut the heart shape out with the scissors to create your wreath form.

Step five:

Once you have cut out, the wreath form find the center of the heart and create a slit with a box cutter.

Step six:

DSCN1788

Pull the ribbon through the slit you created with the box cutter. Tie the ribbon into a bow so you can hang your wreath when you are finished.

Step seven:

Fold a coffee filter into fourths. You can do this by folding in half four times.

Step eight:

DSCN1796.JPG

Glue down the folded coffee filter. Continue folding and gluing down the petals until the heart is complely covered.

DSCN1803DSCN1804

The finished product should look like this:

DSCN1810.JPG

I styled my DIY wreath by layering it over a wreath I found at the dollar store for extra dimension. What do you think about layer wreaths???

I love how this wreath turned out. This project is an awesome DIY project for a wedding or for a girl’s princess room. You can also use the dyed coffee filters to create paper flowers and use them as decor. (pictured below)

DIY New Years Eve Party Hat

DSCN1621When you’re crafty like me your friends automatically sign you up to be on the decorations committee for every function.  I knew it was only a matter of time before I got a call to bring something festive to my friends New Years Eve party. The problem is after Christmas, who has a budget to be festive?

I challenged myself to make something for New Years Eve without buying any new supplies. When I realized I had some party hats leftover from my nephew’s birthday party I knew I hit the party decor jackpot.

Supplies:

Party Hats

Acrylic Paint

Foam Paint Brush

Christmas Garland

Hot Glue Gun

(not pictured) Any small paint brush or pencil with an eraser

paint pallet or a surface you don’t mind having paint on

DSCN1546

Step 1:

Paint the party hat the base color. I would suggest using a dark color to cover whatever existing design is on the hat. You can use a lighter color but you will have to paint 1-2 more coats and allow the paint to fully dry between each coat.

DSCN1562

Step 2:

Once your base color has dried you can begin to paint dots with the tip of a paint brush or the eraser of a pencil. Just pour out a small amount of paint and dip the back end of the brush in the paint and press the tip into the hat to create the dots. Allow the dots to dry completely.

DSCN1569

DSCN1570

Step 3:

Cut a small length of the Christmas garland to create a small ball. Just dap a small amount of glue to one end of the garland and wrap the garland around itself to form a ball.

Step 4:

Place a dot of hot glue to the top of the hat and adhere the garland ball to the top of the hat.

Step 5:

Wrap the garland arount the hat to measure how much you will need to cover the bottom of the hat. At the bottom edge of the hat place a line of hot glur to the hat and attache the garland around the bottom edge of the glue. Be sure to attach a small amount at a time because hot glue dried very fast.

DIY Left Over Station

You may never know why your cousin never brings more than his appetite to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner. You do know that he will leave with his fair share of aluminum foil covered styrofoam plates. If you can’t beat them join them!

This left over station isn’t just for what I like to call the “plate makers” it’s for you as a host as well. After dinner everyone is searching for grocery bags, paper plates, and foil. This to-go station places everything in a central location so people can pack up with ease at the end of the night.

The supplies you will need:

Plastic food containers

Disposable cutlery

Napkins

Disposable cups of your choice

Grocery bags or bag of your choice

Keep in mind that my station is staged. I wanted it to photograph well but you can use what ever you have one hand to create this station. Also think outside the box when it comes to food storage. I love the idea of purchasing plastic food storage containers in lieu of allowing people to leave with paper plates. You may already have some containers you don’t need. Check restaurant supplies who will have large quantities of food storage options at great prices.

This will be a great resource and will keep you out of the kitchen at the end of the night. Your guest can help themselves while you enjoy the rest of your evening.

Use what you already have in your house to make the station festive. You  can repurpose baskets and vases to display seasonal decor. I designed sign and printed it to fit 4 X 7 frame. I added fun messages to plain brown paper gift bags from the dollar store.
