I’m a Classic Woman

This post is more of a picture story inspired by a comment made about my hair color. I was sitting in a meeting at work and my coworker said “I never thought someone as sophisticated as you would wear purple hair!”

I took offense to his comment because my hair color doesn’t change my sophistication level. I work in the tech world. Our employee handbook basically says don’t show up naked.

As a woman showing your creativity through your appearance is always seen as a novelty. I think some people feel more comfortable if you always look the same.

One of the great aspects of being a woman is the constant reinvention of ourselves. We have the ability to carry more than one role. I can be both creative and professional. My coworker will just need to gain some tact.

Where did terms like “classically beautiful” or “beauty standard” derive from? Measuring appearance on a scale is so played out. Society is crying out for acceptance on all levels. I feel like being different needs to be currency in every market. You have the right to evolve from the norm.

No matter a woman’s hair color or style of dress I think there is a classic makeup that we all embody. It’s important as women that we give ourselves the space to be ourselves free from the judgement of others. Be unapologetically you because I’m sure as hell not sorry for my purple hair.

Retro is my thing anything 50’s or 60’s inspired is right up my alley. What’s more classic than gingham print and ice cream. My shirt and skirt are both from Simply Be. Simply Be is a great option for the curvy girl with “classic style”.

I’m closing my post with two quotes from two equally great and wise women:

“Due to a change in color or texture you second guessed your first impression of me”- An expert from the poem Ball of Confusion by Kim Duwaup Bolden

“Dress shabbily and they notice the dress. Dress impeccably and they notice the woman.”- Coco Chanel

  1. It’s too bad your co-worker has such a narrow sense of what sophistication is. She’s also blind. You are sophisticated, and you are playful, and you combine the two really, really well. I also try to express my creativity in the way I dress—for example, my favorite pair of pants got holes, and I patched them with pink Hello Kitty fabric—but I do not have your sense of style. I’m a little envious of it, but I could never work the heels like you do!

    1. Thanks you for reading!! I’d love to see those jeans!

      1. They actually cotton clam-diggers, not jeans. But the patches would look spectacular on jeans too! I should do a mini-blog post on them sometime. They’re really cute, and I like the idea of stretching out the usefulness of things. (: Keep up the good posts!

  3. So cute! I love everything about your hair and this look! I need to get something from Simply Be too- I’ve never tried them before.

BTW, I work in the tech industry too, and I like that we can dress how we want, even though there is still judgement sometimes.

    1. Thank you for reading!! Yes I love the freedom that wearing whatever you want brings but there is always one!! I love Simply Be but read the measurements and size chart. I am a taller lady and they run short in length.

This is a good one! Rings true of my rantiness lately!

    1. Thank you!

  14. This is very well said and I completely agree. I was going to dye my hair into a red and black ombré right before I was getting married (my hair is black), and my husband freaked out giving me the “you can’t be a married woman with crazy hair like that, your going to be a wife” I was like… Oh damn I didn’t realize dip dying the end of my hair red was going to facilitate a change in who I was to the point of being a non functioning partner in our five year relationship! Now I have blue hair, and what do you know our marriage is fine!

    1. Yes, rock whatever color you want! Changing your hair doesn’t effect your character..LOL men don’t know what they like until you come home looking like a different woman.

      1. I remember going from blonde to black and my boyfriend at the time my even noticing… I was like seriously?

  15. i love your purple hair and have been trying to find some type of unique purple to pink combination for the back of my hair. Self expression thru style and hair are a woman’s RIGHT. NO ONE has the right to judge your sophistication based off and maybe your coworker needs to see about living her life a lil bit more…….

    1. Yes!!! It’s our right JY… it was actually a male coworker who made the comment!! That made me even more upset . It’s easy to find the hair you may want to travel to the more “urban” side of town they’ll have every color! I mixed mine mine to tone it down a bit.

  19. I agree. A hairstyle or color, or anything physical for that matter should not define your professionalism. Go you! ROCK the hell outta that purple hair!

    1. Thanks for reading and I plan to rock it til the wheels fall off!!
